Cunjevoi or Spoon Lily

Alocasia brisbanensis

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

A native of the coastal rainforests of New South Wales and Queensland (from North East Queensland south to Wollongong below Sydney). It is a massively erect to decumbent herb 1 – 1.8 metres high with a stem 12cm in diameter often hidden by old leaves.

The leaves are large, glossy green, sagittate to ovate-sagittate up to 70cm long and 60cm wide. The leaf stalk (petiole) can be up to 1.1 metres long and purplish-brown to green and deeply channelled.

The flowers are held on stems (peduncles) equally as long as the leaf stalks hold a spathe of yellowy-green and spadix (flower spike) is sweetly perfumed. The fruit is borne on the lower part of the spadix which peels back to reveal ovoid seeds 8-15mm long which are bright red when ripe.

Parts of this plant were prepared an eaten by the Aboriginals and some South Pacific Islanders still do. Preparation takes weeks of pounding and soaking to remove the plant toxins and it is advisable that you do not attempt to eat this plant. All parts of the plant carry toxins and the sap can be irritating to the eyes.

Offered is a packet of 5 seeds complete with propagation notes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
