Jewel Plant Aloinopsis
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
This plant is a small mat-forming, tuberous rooted, succulent from East Cape Province, South Africa, Lesotho and Swaziland. It grows in a restricted habitat in a winter rainfall climate.
It grows in dense cluster of leaves up to 5 cm (2 in.) tall. Each cluster is formed of 8-10 leaves which are thick, up to 1.8 cm (0.7 in) long, light green to bluish-green or occasionally purplish.
Both surfaces of the leaf are covered with greyish tubercles (dark coloured, raised spots) with a few greyish-white teeth on the upper surface.
Flowers are daisy-like, silky, pale to golden yellow, yellowish bronze or rarely salmon pink. The winter flowers are up to 1.2 cm (0.5 in) in diameter.
This plant requires a very open gravelly mix, full sun for strong flower colour, and minimal watering in summer as it is dormant. In winter, watering is only done when the mix dries out. Fertilising should only done once per growing season (winter).
