(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
This mat-forming plant is native to Worcester – Laingsburg area, Western Cape, South Africa. The plants form a low, densely branched mat up to 15 cm in diameter and prefers to grow on shaly slopes.
An unusual plant in that it is summer dormant to avoid the intense summer heat. Leaves are in pairs, conical in shape and appear in autumn, as summer approaches those leaves dry and form a white papery sheath which protects the next seasons young leaves until cooler weather comes. (see photo).
While the plant is not endangered, it is rarely seen offered on the market.
