A native of West Australia from Karratha to Esperence, from the coastal plain inland to a point east of Wiluna and Kalgoorlie. It prefers white or grey sands, sandy clay in salt marshes and lakes, floodplains, and coastal dunes. It prefers full sun in an open, airy position.

A dioecious (separate male/female plants), spreading, divaricate branched (at a wide angle), a prostrate or erect shrub growing to 0.3 – 1.7 metres high with a spread of up to 4 metres. Branches can spread along the ground and have been known to develop adventitious roots. The thick leaves are a bluish-green covered in fine silver hairs which give the plant a silver foliage appearance. The flower colour allows ready identification of individual plant gender, those of the male plant being purplish-green and those of the female plant being white.

This plant is often cultivated for animal fodder in the drier areas of the inland.
