Malabar Spinach

Basella alba

This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List

Native to tropical Africa, Asia and Papua/New Guinea, it is extensively used in Indian and Asian cooking. It has naturalised in China and South America and likewise to their cuisines.

Malabar Spinach is similar in appearance to Warrigal Greens or NZ Spinach (Tetragonia tetragonoides), both are vines of similar leaf shape and use but the seed tells the difference. Malabar Spinach has a round seed similar to Black Pepper in size and form while Warrigal Greens has a larger, squarish seed with a peak at each corner.

Malabar Spinach is a rich source of vitamins A and C, folate and manganese with moderate levels of vitamin B and dietary minerals.

This plant self-sows and can become a quite dense trailing mat if you use it as a groundcover. As a vegetable, it is kept in check by constant leaf harvesting.

Offered as a packet of approx. 50 seeds with grownotes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
