Queensland Bottle Tree

Brachychiton rupestris

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

A native of the dry inland of Queensland, it prefers medium to heavy soils in an open, sunny position. It is drought and frost resistant and considered very hardy (zones 9 to 11). It is considered to be slow growing but with regular water/fertiliser it will start developing its distinctive trunk while very young.

An evergreen or deciduous tree (depending on climate), it has a distinctive barrel shaped trunk up to 2 metres (7 ft) in diameter. The leaves are variable from a simple narrow-elliptical to a deeply divided palmate form. The flowers are yellow, bell-shaped and hidden in the foliage during spring to summer. The fruit are pods which should not be handled without heavy gloves as they contain seed and protective fine silicon rods which can cause considerable irritation.

The young leaf shoots can be used as a salad vegetable and the gum exuded from the tree is edible.

Offered is a packet of 15 seeds with Grownotes to assist you to propagate.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
