A native of all mainland states of Australia where it prefers light, moist soils in a protected semi-shaded position. It is frost hardy but drought tender.

A perennial plant growing to a height of 0.5 metres with a spread of 0.3 metres. The leaves are basal, succulent, narrow, 30cm long and onion-like. The flowers are held on a narrow stem, have 3 petaloid sepals and 3 petals and appear in spring and summer.

The Australian Aborigine used the bulb for food.
