Desert Bird of Paradise

Caesalpinia gilliesii

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

A native of the tropical America – mainly Argentina and Uruguay and has become naturalised in Texas and common in other south-western USA states.

An deciduous shrub growing to 1-4 metres (3-12ft) depending on rainfall. It has bipinnate (ferny) leaves 10-15 cm long and the flowers are borne in racemes up 20cm long. The flowers have five bright yellow petals and 10 long, conspicuous stamens. The fruit are pods densely covered in short, red glandular hairs.

This tropical plant is adapted to a dry climate and is known to thrive in a Mediterranean climate. Natives of the Amazon rainforest used this plant for curing fevers, sores, coughs and abortion in the first trimester. However, the green seed pods and seed are toxic and should not be  eaten.

Offered is a packet of 4 seeds and Grownotes to assist you to cultivate this spectacular flowering plant.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
