Beach Bean, Jack Bean

Canavalia rosea syn. maritima

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

The Beach Bean goes under many names – Bay Bean, Jack Bean, Coastal Jack Bean, Seaside Jack Bean and Mackenzie Bean to name a few. It is a prostrate vine that inhabits the beaches of tropical and subtropical areas of the world. A member of the Pea Family (Fabaceae), it is a herbaceous vine that forms mats of foliage. The stems may be up to 7 metres (20 ft) long and 2.5 cm (1 in) in thickness. The leaves are compound consisting of three leaflets which fold to protect them from hot sunlight. The flowers are pea-shaped, rich pink in colour and the fruit is a pod similar to the garden pea. The seeds are buoyant, salt-tolerant and are distributed by ocean currents.

The large seeds of this plant are edible if boiled and the Australian Aborigine made an infusion of the roots for colds and applied the same infusion externally for rheumatism, leprosy and aches and pains.

The plant is of no grazing significance but is an important salt-tolerant species for beach and dune stabilization.

Offered is a packet of 5 seeds complete with propagation notes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
