New South Wales Christmas Bush

Ceratopetalum gummiferum

A native of New South Wales where it prefers light to medium well-drained soils in a protected, sunny position. It does not like drought, frost or wind. 

A  small evergreen tree growing to  6 metres with a spread of 3 metres. The stem is erect and branching supporting a spreading crown; the leaves are light green; stiff, tri-pinnate (3 leaflets) 6 mm across, with serrate margins; the flowers are the calyces only, white, later enlarging and turning a deep rich red. The flowers appear in spring and ripen through summer.

This plant’s flowers are part of the Australian cut flower export industry.
