Tree Lucerne, Tagasaste or Canary Island Lucerne Tree

— Bulk Quantity —

Chamaecytisus palmensis syn Cytisus proliferus

(This plant is NOT on the Australian Noxious Weed List)

This is a small shrubby tree growing to 5 metres with an equal spread.  A native of the Canary Islands where it prefers the extremely arid soils on volcanic slopes of the island but will do equally as well on sandy soils, gravel, loams limestone and laterites. The branches are long, leafy and drooping; flowers are white, fragrant and profuse; fruit are pea-like pods and it has no thorns. It survives temperatures down to minus 9 degrees C.

This tree has multiple uses as –

Fodder – the crude protein content of the leaves is 20-24% which equates with high quality temperate pasture.

Bee Forage – one of the first trees to flower in spring and it is an excellent source of nectar.

Timber & Firewood – dense wood ideal for wood turning and has a high potential as a firewood crop.

Windbreaks – when close planted and mature it provides shelter from cold winds and summer heat.

Alley Cropping – it has good potential as an inter-crop in temperate orchards and as a nurse crop for cold sensitive trees.

In addition, this plant is of the Fabaceae family and as such has nitrogen fixing abilities once inoculated with Rhizobium bacteria. Not all areas require inoculation and your local Department of Agriculture/Primary Industries can advise you accordingly.

The only negative comment I found is that the foliage should not be fed to small birds during flowering.

Propagation by seed occurs readily.

Other quantities are also available in the store.

Offered is 250 grams (approx. 11,000 seeds) with propagation notes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
