Kaka Beak, Parrot’s Beak, Lobster Claw

Clianthus puniceus

(This plant is NOT on the Australian Noxious Weed List)

A New Zealand native parrot called the Kaka gives its Maori name to this plant. Critically endangered in New Zealand with only 200 known plants which grow in the Te Urewera National Park on the North Island, a national recovery plan is aimed at helping the plant recover but it is feared the genetic base is too narrow. However, the plant is very popular with New Zealand gardeners and a wider genetic base may be discovered. The decline of this plant has been caused by the combined impact of the destruction of native habitat, grazing by goats, pigs and deer, the introduction of brown snails and the plant’s preference for permanently open or early successional sites.

A soft, woody shrub with sprawling habit growing to 2 metres high by 1.5 metres wide (6.6ft x 4.8ft). the leaves are mid-green. 15cm long and comprising opposite pairs of small leaflets (pinnate). The flowers, which are a brilliant red, appear in clusters through spring and summer followed by long, pendulous pea pods. The plant needs an open, sunny position and presently inhabits scrubby forest margins and flaxlands, bluffs and cliffs, lake and river margins, road margins, landslide scars and initial regrowth areas after burning.

The pre-European Maoris used to cultivate this plant in their villages and there is some thought that they contributed to the survival of this plant.
