(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
The Mountain Vygie is a perennial mat-forming succulent that is cold and salt tolerant. This is an unusual combination of characteristics in that it is not usual to find Saline soils in mountainous regions. The plant stores salt in its leaves and it is thought that it is a protection strategy against freezing temperatures. Most plants die when exposed to salt but the Mountain Vygie just thrives in those conditions.
A low-growing plant with prostrate stems and round to 3 sided leaves with a blunt tip. Leaf colour ranges from grey-green with a red-brown tip when the plant is water stressed to a rich deep green when water is abundant. Colour of the 20 mm diameter flower is purple-pink and flowering is from November to March in the Southern Hemisphere.
This adaptable plant tolerates summer heat without water, is maintenance free and has reported diuretic qualities for the treatment of dysentery, liver and kidney disease and pneumonia. The leaves can be crushed and the liquid content is used to relieve itchiness, insect stings and sunburn.
