White Flag Iris
Diplarrena moraea
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
A native evergreen perennial herb which is endemic to Tasmania, Victoria and just reaching into New South Wales. This plant forms a clump and is used for landscaping in Victoria in lieu of the Dietes species which are not native.
This plant prefers full sun, grows on a variety of soils, and is frost tolerant. The stiff, erect, dark green, Iris-like leaves are flat and linear in shape, 5 – 10cm wide and 50 – 100cm long. The flowers are held in groups of 2 to 6 but open individually on 100cm long stems. They are delicately fragrant and appear in spring through summer.
Diplarrena is a long-lived clumping plant that responds well to pot culture providing it gets adequate water and fertiliser. It is subject to very few insect or fungal attacks and maintenance consists or removal of dead or unsightly leaves occasionally.
This plant grows readily from seed but the use of smoke treatment will greatly improve results. Smoke treatment is a simple process and is available in my store.
