Doryanthes palmeri

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

A native of northern New South Wales and south-east Queensland, this huge plant prefers poor, stony soils on slopes and therefore very good drainage.

An evergreen plant with large basal leaves (up to 2.4m/8 ft long) and a flower spike that can reach 5m/17ft in height. However, the flower spike can often be arched with the flowers turned toward the light. Flowering is in spring with each flower containing large quantities of nectar.

This plant needs room as it can reach a total width of 4.8 metres/16 feet.
