Golden Barrel Cactus
Echinocactus grusonii
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
A native of Mexico where it grows on low fertility soils in a small habitat area. The plant has become severely endangered in the wild because of habitat destruction resulting from dam construction. However, such is the interest in this plant that it is commonly seen throughout the world.
A geometric globular or barrel-shaped Cactus with vertical ribs with stiff, dense, yellow spines that almost obscure the plant and a fuzzy crown of immature spikes. An oddity is that the plant in the wild always lean to the south-west and this has been practiced by gardeners to prevent water resting in the crown and causing rot in many species.
Golden Barrel Cactus grows to 1 metre tall with an equal spread but it is doubtful that you will see it that size because it is extremely slow growing.
