Sandpaper Fig

Ficus coronata

This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.

A native of the Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria where it prefers light to medium soils in an open, sunny position chiefly in coastal areas but is present on the NSW Tablelands and Western Slopes. It is drought and frost tolerant (zones 9-11).

An evergreen medium tree of 15 metres with a spread of 5 metres, it is an irregularly shaped tree. It can have a large buttressed trunk or a massive trunk of smooth-barked coalesced roots.

The leaves are light glossy green, elliptical, with prominent venation on the underside. The upper surface is rough and feels like sandpaper and was used as such.

The fruit is globose to oblong almost sessile (stemless), velvety-skinned and ripens to a dull purple when they are sweet, soft and edible.

All Australian native figs have edible fruit which can be dry and bland or sweet, succulent and juicy.

The Aboriginals used the sap of the Sandpaper Fig to treat wounds and sores.

Offered is a packet of 20 seeds along with Grownotes to assist you in their propagation.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
