Sacred Fig, Bodhi, Bo or Peepul Tree

Ficus religiosa

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

A native of India, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, south-west China and Indochina where it prefers rich, moist soils in a protected, sunny position. It dislikes both frost and drought but is most suited as an indoor plant or a bonsai specimen.

An deciduous tree growing to 30 metres (100ft) with a spread of 7 metres (23ft). The stem is erect, buttressed and branching and supports a densely textured crown; the leaves are a bluish- green, leathery, ovate (roughly oval) and acuminate (pointed tip), proximately veined; the fruit are purplish, small, sessile (stemless) figs, paired in the leaf axils.

All fig trees have aggressive root systems which seek water at considerable distances from the tree. Figs should be planted either in very large areas or in large pots that can be rocked occasionally to break the escaping root system. They are also good Bonsai specimens.

The Sacred Fig is revered by Buddhists as the tree under which Buddha received Enlightenment, Hindus revere the tree as the ‘King of Trees’ and it is sacred to other beliefs.

Offered is a packet of 50 seeds and Grownotes to assist you to cultivate this exotic fig.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
