This plant is a native of South Africa where it prefers light to medium, well drained soils in a protected, warm sunny position. It is drought and frost resistant.
An evergreen shrub or small tree growing 2 to 5 metres in height. the leaves are leathery, hairless, glossy, light green with clearly marked veins. The leaves are small and simple, oval with entire margins.
The flowers are large, showy, creamy white and heavily perfumed, particularly at night. Unlike some Gardenias the flowers do not ‘yellow’ with age. Flowers are produced profusely during summer. The fruit is egg-shaped, hard, woody and fibrous and can persist on the shrub for years.
Gardenias have long been used for medicinal treatments in traditional medicine and if you are so inclined it is worth doing a little research on the subject.
