Living Stones or Baby’s Bottom
Gibbaeum petrense
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
A dwarf succulent plant from Western Cape (Langeberg), South Africa where it lives on white quartz patches overlying clay slopes, a habitat of just 10 km. In time, it forms a compact clump, 50-100 mm wide, of paired sharp-edged, grey-green leaves joined for nearly three-quarters of their length. The leaves are very firm to the touch, fleshy and about 1.5cm in length. Leaf colour, when grown in full sun, is green to whitish or greyish sometimes tinged with yellow, red or purple.
The plant blooms in Spring and the flowers (pink to reddish-violet) are produced more readily than other Gibbaeums. They are hardy to -5°C in dry soils and are considered the easiest to grow of the Gibbaeum genus.
The plant is listed as vulnerable having lost habitat to roadworks and livestock trampling.
