A native of the eastern and northern  coasts of Australia extending from the south coast of New South Wales through Queensland’s eastern and northern coasts, the Northern Territory to the north-west West Australian coast. An extensive habitat, soil types and a cool temperature to tropical climate.

A fast growing, evergreen, medium sized tree growing to 8 metres (26ft) tall with flaky grey-brown bark; the stem is erect and supports a dense, closed crown; the leaves are simple, alternate, glossy, elliptical to 10cm long and 4cm wide; the flowers are small and just noticeable in the leaf axils, male and female flowers occur on the same tree which may flower at any time; the fruit are small and pumpkin shaped, green at first turning shades of white, pink and then deep red when ripe.

This tree is important to the ecology being a pioneer species that grows readily from seed. It is host to the Shining Oak-Blue and Pencilled Oak-Blue butterflies and the Hercules or Atlas Moth while its fruit is eaten by the Figbird, Lewin’s Honeyeater, Olive-backed Oriole, White-headed and Topknot Pigeons, Brown Cuckoo-dove, King-Parrot, Pied Currawong and Rainbow Lorikeet.

This tree grows readily from seed.
