(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
A native of the southern coast and inland of West Australia, this plant is one of the most admired of native plants. Overseas it is used for street plantings and hedges.
An evergreen shrub growing to 4 metres with a spread of 2 metres, it prefers medium to heavy soils in a protected, sunny position. Position of this plant is most important because flowering will suffer or cease in shade and the shrub become spindly. Protection from strong winds is advisable because of the rather weak root system.
The stem is erect with a smooth bark and slender branches; the leaves are broadly sickle shaped, prominently veined, petioled (stalked) and 15cn long; the flowers are cream and pink appearing in dense pin-cushion-like heads in Autumn and through Winter. A well grown plant will commence flowering in April and cease in August (Southern Hemisphere) provided the winter is not too severe.
