A native of the Rio Grande area of Texas and Mexico, this plant is a clump-forming succulent with arching, leathery, grass-like dark green foliage with sparse fibrous strands on the leaf margins. Flowering is on stems that can reach 60 to 100 cm tall (2 – 3 ft) and bear masses of crowded, coral red flowers with a golden throat.
The foliage has a reddish-bronze hue in winter which adds to the plant’s interest year-round. The plant is minimum maintenance, heat tolerant yet cold hardy and will grow on poor soils. Like most succulents, offsets can be taken in Spring.
