Hibiscus tiliaceus is a native of New South Wales, Queensland, Northern Territory and SE Asia where it prefers light soils in an open sunny position. It is drought and salt tolerant but frost tender.

An evergreen tree to a height of 9 metres and a spread of 3 metres, it has a short trunk with smooth grey bark and widely spreading branches. The leaves are light green, heart-shaped and 12 cm long. The flowers are typical hibiscus flowers, yellow with a deep pink centre and occur in summer.

It grows in sandy soils amongst the first line of vegetation on seaside beaches and is very resistant to salty environments.
