Goat’s Foot Convolvulus

Ipomoea pes-capre

This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List

A native of tropical and sub-tropical sea-shores worldwide including Australia. It is an important seaside dune stabiliser having a deep taproot and rooting at the nodes as it creeps along the dunes. Needless to say, it likes full sun and is salt tolerant.

An evergreen, trailing plant with thick leaves of varying shape but mostly the shape of a goat or horse hoof print. The flowers are large, usually pink but can be reddish purple or violet and they are usually darker at the base. They are rarely white.

This plant plays a large part in folk medicine. The sap is used to alleviate fish stings; the leaves are used to draw boils; sap from young leaves is boiled in coconut milk to treat sores and ulcers; seeds are chewed with Areca Nut to alleviate abdominal pains and cramps; leaves are boiled to treat rheumatism; tubers have a diuretic effect and are boiled to relieve bladder problems.

The leaves are also eaten by cows and pigs but taint cow’s milk.

Offered is a packet of 15 seeds complete with propagation notes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
