Martagon Pink or Turk’s Cap Lily

This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.
The Martagon Lily has a broad habitat in Europe and Asia. It grows naturally in Portugal eastwards to as far as Mongolia, including the Middle East. Martagon is the Turkish word for ‘cap’ but it is also called the Sultan Lily, Dragon Lily and Lily of Istanbul there.
This lily grows 1 – 2 metres (3’3″- 6’7″) tall and has been known to bear up to 50 blooms on a single flower stem. The flowers are most often a deep pin with spots but it is very variable and colours of near-white through to near black have been seen. The flowers are scented and the green stems may be flushed with purple or red. The leaves of mid-green are 16 cm long (6.3 in.) and elliptic.
Like all members of the Lilium family, the pollen is toxic to cats and the two should not be mixed.
