Goji Berry – Chinese Wolfberry

Lycium chinense

This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List

The Goji Berry has become quite popular in the health food industry and the name is taken from the Chinese Go-Ji, the name of the bush.

A shrub growing to 2.5 metres with a spread of 2 metres (9ft x 6ft) with a moderate growth rate. Tolerant of poor to average well-drained soils and temperatures down to -23C (-9F), it flowers December to January (Southern Hemisphere) bearing single blue Solanaceae flowers. It is also salt hardy and will grow quite well in a maritime climate.

The fruit is an oblong berry about 15mm long and 8mm wide with an aniseed-like flavour. It can be eaten raw or cooked or dried for later use. Like all Solanaceae (potato, tomato, eggplant, tamarillo etc) the fruit should be fully ripe before being eaten. Green fruit not only tastes bad but can be toxic unless fully mature.

In addition to edible fruit, the leaves and young shoots have a peppermint-like flavour and can be used in salads or dried and used as a tea substitute. The seeds can be roasted and used as a coffee substitute.

Offered is a packet of 50 seeds complete with propagation notes.

All seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
