Bush Banana or Silky Pear

Marsdenia australis

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

The Bush Banana is a native climber, the fruit of which was utilised by the Australian Aboriginals as a food source. Its common name was given by early Settlers who had probably never seen a banana. It is found in all arid and semi-arid areas of Australia.

The flowers, young leaves, roots and fruit are edible. The young fruit is eaten uncooked and more mature fruit is usually roasted in the hot earth beside a fire as are the roots.

The plant prefers clay or limestone-based soil in full sun and is lightly watered. In cultivation, the soil should be allowed to dry out between watering.

Offered is a packet of 15 seeds with propagation notes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
