Tea Tree Oil Melaleuca

Melaleuca alternifolia

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

The use of Tea-Tree Oil has spread worldwide and our thanks should go to the pioneer settlers of New South Wales and Queensland who used the oil as an antiseptic. The plant that is used to produce the oil is not a Tea Tree (Leptospermum) but a paperbark or honey myrtle (Melaleuca). The bark of this tree is often used in ‘bark art’.

Suitable as a garden specimen plant or as a screening plant, it will accept hedging and heavy pruning. The flowers appear in profusion, mostly in spring and summer, like fluffy white masses and put on quite a show.

If left unpruned it will grow into a small tree of 7 metres with a dense crown and its distinctive white papery bark.

This plant is an inhabitant of damp places from Coffs Harbour to Bundaberg on the coastal plain, however, it has been recorded as far south as Stroud NSW.

Offered is a packet of 5 gm approx 30000 seeds (including chaff) with propagation notes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
