This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List

A native of tropical Central America, this plant is now grown all over the world. A huge shade-loving vine with attractive leaves and flowers and delicious edible fruit.

An evergreen vine that climbs to a height of 5 metres (16ft), it prefers rich, moist, well-drained soils in a protected and shaded position. It is drought and frost sensitive. The stem is stout, erect and changes direction at the leaf nodes and has aerial roots; the leaves are glossy green, huge, with perforations and deeply incised margins and stout petiole (leaf stalk); the flowers are greenish-white and like that of the Arum Lily and the fruit is like an exposed corn cob while unripe. The fruit is edible but does not ripen for 12 to 18 months after flowering. The outer hexagonal scales fall away when ripe to expose a fruit pulp with a custard-like texture. The fruit smells like pineapple and bananas and tastes like fruit salad. Unripe fruit causes inflammation to the mouth, tongue and throat and should not be eaten.

This plant is easy to grow outdoors in warm climates and may be grown indoors in all but the coldest of conditions.

Offered is a packet of 10 seeds with propagation notes.
