Myrtle Beech

Nothofagus cunninghamii

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

A very ancient tree known to have been a resident of Gondwanaland, its habitat is somewhat reduced to much of Tasmania’s cool rainforest and a small presence in Victoria’s Otway Ranges and Strzelecki Ranges. In areas where it does occur, it is the major species of the rainforest.

The Myrtle Beech is a slow growing, evergreen tree in cool rainforests but is a small, stunted shrub at higher altitudes.  most often it is a 50-metre tree in sheltered, moist valleys. The leaves are small, 7 – 15mm long and broad, rhomboidal in shape and a rich dark green. New growth is reddish bronze and very attractive. The flowers are unisexual, the female flowers (catkins), in threes, are above the male flowers and the seeds are small, nut-like with two or three wings.

In cultivation, this tree will tolerate frosts to minus 7 degrees C, which is forgiving of soils provided they are not poor or prone to drying out. In cultivation, the application of leaf mulch regularly will provide a better tree.

Myrtle Beech is much sought after as a construction and joinery timber.

Offered is a packet of 25 seeds with propagation notes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
