Plum or Brown Pine

Podocarpus elatus

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

A native of the east coastal dense subtropical, riverine and seashore rainforests extending from Cape York to the Illawarra region (100 km south of Sydney).

An evergreen tall tree growing to 40 metres in its native habitat and possibly the only pine that is fire resistant.

Fast growing, it only takes 8 to 10 years to reach maturity. Although a conifer, this tree does not have a ‘pine cone’ but instead carries a single seed attached to the branch by a fleshy stem. It is this fleshy stem that was used by the Aborigines as food. Fruit only appears on the female plant but both plants are worth growing.

Aboriginal use. The dark, juicy pulp of the fruit tastes rich and sweet but has a very resinous central core which is best avoided. Modern use is to make a sauce with the fruit for use in wild food restaurants.  The NSW aboriginals rated this fruit highly but the Queensland climate provided a much wider variety of fruit and local Aboriginals did not rate it highly at all.

Offered is a packet of 15 seeds with propagation notes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
