A native of western Asia and the Middle East, this fruit has been cultivated for thousands of years and was associated with fertility rites because of the amount of seed it carries.

A deciduous shrub that prefers humus-rich, heavy soils in a protected sunny position. 

Growing to a height of 5 metres x 3 metres (16ft x 9ft), the stem is slender with spiny-tipped branches; the leaves a glossy light green; the flowers are red to orange occurring in large clusters and the fruit are orange-red berries with a thick rind and acid but pleasant-tasting pulp.

Offered is a packet of 20 seeds with propagation notes.
