Red Crown Cactus
Rebutia albiareolata
This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.
A cactus from Bolivia thought to be a form of Rebutia diminuta. It is prone to offsets which will flower as regularly as their parents. Growing just 3-8 cm wide and 6-8 cm tall in their natural habitat, they grow larger and cluster more vigorously in cultivation.
The plant is covered in soft, white spines that protect the plant from the sun and the -4°C cold of the Andes Mountains. Dormancy can occur in summer if the temperature is too high, they resume growing when the temperature cools. Tiny berry-like fruit are hidden among the spines and burst when ripe.
This species prefers an open mineral mix with lots of pumice. Overwatering or allowing the mix to retain water encourages the plant to rot. However, this plant is regarded as very easy to grow and is recommended for beginners.
Offered is a packet of approximately 20 seeds with propagation instructions.
