Scabiosa Drumsticks
Scabiosa stellata
Scabiosa has been cultivated for almost 300 years in southern Europe where it has the name Pincushion Flower. In the past few years, hybridists have taken this plant to new heights in colour and form.
Scabiosa Drumsticks is a branching, upright, wiry-stalked annual with medium green, ovate to lance-shaped, pinnately divided leaves to 175 mm long. The flowers, carried in mid-summer, are solitary, globular, light blue and up to 30 mm wide followed by clusters of cup-shaped, maroon and green, large bracts which form a showy, bronze coloured seed-head.
After flowering, the plant forms the most unusual seed-heads which are used in dried flower arrangements.
Scabiosa likes a sunny position, neutral to alkaline, well-drained soil kept a bit on the dry side.
