Desert Raisin or Bush Tomato

Solanum centrale

This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.

This plant is a native of those states that include a part of the dry centre (150 – 300mm rainfall) of Australia and forms part of the Aboriginal’s traditional food.

An evergreen shrub that grows to 30 cm (12in), it has a thorny aspect, grey-green leaves and forms suckers from the mother plant. In years of poor rainfall, it can go dormant and die back to the rootstock and may remain such for many years. Upon good rains, it will grow rapidly from the rootstock and fruit prolifically.

The fruit is rich in vitamin C, 1 to 3cm in diameter and yellow when ripe. They dry on the bush and resemble raisins. The fruit has a strong, pungent taste of Tamarillo and caramel and is popular in sauces and stews.

Fruiting in the wild occurs for two months in late autumn. However, there are several Aboriginal communities that grow the plant commercially and it has been found that sufficient water will extend fruiting to 8 months. Ground fruit is marketed as Kutjera Powder by Outback Pride.

There are several warnings associated with this fruit. Green fruit contains the toxin solanine and only fully ripened fruit should be eaten. There are several related species that look like Solanum centrale but the fruit remains toxic even after ripening.

This plant requires smoke treatment before it will germinate. Smoke treatment is the simple process of covering the sown seed with smoked vermiculite (available in my store) and watering in.

Offered as a packet of 20 seeds with grownotes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
