This plant is a native of tropical Thailand, Burma and India so a warm, shady position is a must. In tropical and sub-tropical areas it can be grown in the garden given the right conditions. Further south than Coffs Harbour it will require protection from the elements, either in a greenhouse or indoors.
The black flower is most unusual. It is a complex flower having broad bat-like wings surrounding the ‘business’ part of the flower from which long, drooping, black ‘whiskers’ arise. There is also a white form seen occasionally.
Not one for the beginner, as this plant will only perform if you give it what it requires. Otherwise, it will slowly lose vigour and finally succumb.
Offered as a packet of approx. 30 seeds with grownotes.
