Asparagus Pea or Winged Pea

Tetragonolobus purpurea cv

This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List

This unusual annual vegetable is not a member of the Asparagus nor Pea family but a member of Legumaceae, the nitrogen fixers from Mediterranean Europe. It has a broad habitat so soils can be light to heavy provided they are well-drained and don’t need to be rich.

This small vine or scrambler growing a maximum of 50cm (20in) on a support, has small trifoliate leaves (three leaflets)  and bright red flowers borne in pairs. Following the flowers are ‘winged’ pods that grow to 8cm long (3 1/2in) that are edible raw or cooked and are best when 2.5cm (1in) long. At this time pods may be eaten raw, boiled, sautéed, steamed, tempura battered and deep-fried or pickled. The flowers can be added to salads and cheeses as an edible garnish. The pods have a delicate asparagus-like flavour.

Pods allowed to develop beyond 2.5cm quickly turn fibrous but can be left to provide seed for the next season or the seeds can be collected and boiled like garden peas or roasted to make an excellent coffee substitute.

This plant is considered easily grown from seed.

Offered is a packet of approx. 20 seeds with propagation notes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
