Tulbaghia violacea

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)

A native of south and eastern Africa, its habitat extends from eastern South Africa to Zimbabwe. It is useful in hot difficult corners and will withstand prolonged drought

A perennial, fast-growing, rhizomatous plant that grows to a height of 0.5 metres; the leaves are long, narrow and strap-like and slight fleshy; the roots are tuberous and spreading to form clumps and the flowers are pinkish-mauve, tubular, held on long stalks above the foliage in umbels of up to 20 flowers. They appear for 4 months during the southern summer.

The flowers, leaves and tubers smell of garlic when picked. Leaves and flowers can be used in salads and other dishes. The crushed leaves are used as a cure for sinus headaches or rubbed on the skin as an insect repellant. The tubers are boiled and made into decoctions which are taken orally to clear up coughs and colds, pulmonary tuberculosis and against intestinal worms.

This plant will grow in most well-drained soils, is used as a border or fill for difficult spots or can be mass planted. They perform very well if given a partially shaded spot with plenty of water and liquid fertiliser. Clumps may be divided every two years.

Offered as a packet of 25 seeds with grownotes.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
