Butter Bush
Tylecodon paniculata
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
Tylecodon genus has been split from Cotyledon and one is an anagram of the other. Tylecodon is summer deciduous (dormant) and has spirally arranged leaves with several differences in flower structure.
The genus is very varied with dwarf and 2 metre plants in the family. The Butter Bush, if grown outside, is likely to reach better than 2 metres high and have any number of branches. It is mostly grown in a shallow bonsai-type or cactus pot to tame its vigour.
Flowering is just before summer dormancy when the plant produces clusters of red flowers held above the plant and while the leaves are being shed.
Tylecodons prefer a free draining soil of mostly sand, a winter rainfall in arid areas of South Africa/Namibia.
