Tufted Yacca Grass Tree

Xanthorrhoea semiplana ssp semiplana

This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Plant List.

A native of South Australia, primarily the Mount Lofty Ranges in the southeast of the state. Reports of a presence in Victoria are thought to be the result of misidentification.

Preference is for a rich, well-drained, slightly rocky soil in full sun. Its habitat is a dry, temperate area with moderate frosts.

An often trunkless shrub which occasionally may produce a trunk 1 metre tall, it grows into a large, stiff tuft of bluish leaves, perhaps the widest of all the Xanthorrhoeas. The leaves are 1cm wide and flat on one side and up to 2 metres long.

Flowering is on a tall spike, often twice the height of the plant. The flowers are creamy white.

Aboriginal Use. The natives collected the flakes of resin at the base of the plant and heated them to form round balls for easy portability. The resin balls were then reheated and used for securing stone flakes to spear shafts and a multitude of ‘glue’ tasks.

Offered is a packet of 20 seeds and propagation notes for this native plant.
