Beaked Yucca
Yucca rostrata
The Beaked Yucca is perhaps the most elegant and popular Yucca. It usually grows from a single trunk which is only very rarely branching.
Native to western Texas and northeast Mexico, it can grow a trunk up to 4.5 metres tall with a crown of crowded leaves on the top. The leaves are blue-green, thin, stiff, up to 60 cm long but rarely more than 15m wide, tapering to a sharp point at the tip. The trunk is very heavy but has a small root ball which is barely wider than the trunk.
Drought, heat and frost tolerant to minus 15 degrees C once established. Its natural habitat is on rocky outcrops and limestone gravels. Naturally, the soil must be free draining and this Yucca only needs watering once a week in summer and once a month in winter. It performs well in large pots.
The plant’s common name comes from its fruit which looks like the beak of a bird.
The seed for this plant is rarely offered and then only in small quantities. It is therefore expensive (I have seen it offered at twice the price I am offering this seed!)
Offered is a packet of 5 seeds and Grownotes to assist you to cultivate this slow-growing succulent.
All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
