Blackwood
Acacia melanoxylon
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
The Blackwood is a native of eastern Australia (Qld, NSW, VIC, SA and TAS) where it prefers rich, loamy soils in a moist, protected position and is frost resistant but dislikes drought.
An evergreen tree growing to 20m with a spread of 10m (65ft x 33ft), it has a graceful stem with a dense, symmetrical crown. The phyllodes (leaves) are greyish green, slightly curved, with rounded ends and 3 to 6 parallel veins and 20cm long; the flowers are pale yellow balls, occurring in small clusters and appearing winter to summer; the fruit is curved pods, sometimes into a complete circle and contain seeds which are black with an orange aril.
The Australian Aboriginals used the bark and twigs of this tree as a fish poison and roasted bark as a treatment for rheumatism.
Offered is a packet of 30 fresh seeds and Grownotes to assist you in its cultivation.
