Callistemon pachyphyllus and
Callistemon pachyphyllus var viridus
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List)
This bottlebrush is a small to medium sized shrub, usually reaching about 3 metres (10ft) in height. Its common name comes from the sandy, coastal heath habitat which in Australia is known as the ‘Wallum’.
Although not widely cultivated as a garden plant, the Wallum Bottlebrush is a hardy plant under a wide range of conditions. There are two forms of this plant identified by flower colour and both forms occur throughout the range of the species. Seed collectors do not differentiate the colour forms when collecting seed in the wild and the seed offered is a mixture of both the red and green forms.
The Wallum Bottlebrush has thick, blunt pointed leaves and spreading branches which can be quite contorted at times. It is drought tolerant and semi tolerant of salt though it prefers little frost.
