Copperleaf Snowberry or Waxberry
Gaultheria hispida
(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)
Endemic to Tasmania where it prefers light to medium, moist soils in a protected, sunny position. It will withstand heavy frosts but dislikes drought conditions and is very common in wet forests and sub-alpine woodlands.
An evergreen shrub growing to 1 metre (39in) with a spread of 1 metre; the stem is dainty with many branches and a densely textured crown; the leaves are a deep glossy green, broad and 5cm long with toothed margins, new growth is copper coloured; the spring to summer flowers are small, white bell shaped blooms occurring in heavy clusters; the fruit are prolific, succulent, white berries which are edible.
The berries were a food source for the Tasmanian Aboriginals. While researching this plant, one source said ‘an attractive shrub of Tasmania’s sub-alpine to alpine regions. I cannot recommend more. Pick ’em and eat ’em when white. Score 4/5.’
Offered is a packet of approximately 50 seeds complete with propagation notes.
