Camellia Flowered Mix
Impatiens are found all over the world but this particular species is native to India, Bangladesh and Burma. It is perhaps the tallest growing Impatiens on the market and despite its limited distribution can now be found in most countries.
A plant growing 20 – 75 cm tall (8 – 30 in) with a thick, soft stem. The leaves are arranged spirally 2.5 – 9 cm long (1 – 3 1/2 in), quite broad with deeply toothed margins. The flowers are doubles in pink, red, mauve lilac or white and pollination is affected by bees and other insects and nectar feeding birds.
An unusual feature of this plant is that the seed pods explosively shatter when ripe to broadcast next seasons seeds. Removal of seed pods before ripening will prevent this.
This plant is used in traditional Asian medicine for treating disease and skin afflictions. Sap from from leaves is used to treat warts and snake bite and the flower is applied to burns. It is used for constipation and gastritis in Korea, the Chinese pulverise the stems and pastes from the flowers for a variety of ailments. In Vietnam an extract is used for washing the hair to prevent baldness.
