Native to the high Drakensberg Mountains of South Africa, this is one of the lowest growing, prettiest and most reliably cold hardy species of the genus. They are hardy to zone 4. Growing just 80cm (17in) tall with a spread to 50cm it is suitable for the smaller garden plot.
Kniphofia also known as Torch Lilies require well drained soils (particularly in winter), prefer full sun, and are easy to grow if you get this right. They form grey-green clumps with strap-like leaves that remain evergreen in milder climates and flower in summer. The large orange/red flowers are held on a tall spike clear of the foliage and are attractive to nectar feeding birds.
This plant will tolerate a maritime climate (salt air) and once established it is drought tolerant.
The flowers also make a very good cut flower having an excellent vase life.
Offered is a packet of 15 seeds and Grownotes to assist you to cultivate this hardy, succulent plant.
