Lychnis chalcedonica
A native of Eastern Europe, Central Russia and Mongolia that has been spread to the western world and beyond. In English, the plant has 19 names (including those above). They are Burning Love, Rose, Constantinople & Meadow Campion, Dusky Salmon, Fireball, Flower of Bristol and of Constantinople, Gardener’s Eye & Delight, Nonesuch, Red Robin, Scarlet Lightning, Scarlet Lychnis and Tears of Christ.
A perennial plant growing to 35-100 cm (14-39 in) tall with unbranched stems, the leaves are in opposite pairs and the flowers produced in clusters of 10-15 are red and are heavily lobed. The fruit is a dry capsule that splits after ripening.
Adaptable to most well-drained soils, it dislikes ‘wet feet’ and will not survive long in those conditions. The plant is popular in cold climates and has even won the Royal Horticultural Society’s Ward of Garden merit.
