Flanders Poppy, Red Corn Poppy
Papaver nudicaule cv
A native of Europe better known to Australians and New Zealanders as the Flanders Poppy after the World War I battlefields of Belgium and worn by them as a mark of respect to their casualties of war.
A hardy annual that readily self-seeds. The large 50 – 100ml blooms are fire engine red vividly marked with purplish-black centres individually borne on 0.3m to 0.4m stems. Once flowering commences the foliage becomes inconspicuous allowing the flower to express its full beauty.
This poppy prefers well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade and performs best if sown in late autumn in warmer regions or early spring in colder ones.
USDA all continental zones.
