Cat’s Paw, Kangaroo Paw

Anigozanthos humilis

(This plant is not on the Australian Noxious Weed List.)

A native of West Australia’s south-western corner where it prefers light soils in an open shaded position. It is drought resistant but dislikes frosts.

A perennial plant growing to a height of 15cm with a spread of 30cm; the stem is simple, unbranched and flowering; the leaves are a medium green, sickle shaped, smooth, tufted and stiffly hairy on the inner margin; the flowers are an orange-red and yellow, paw-like and obliquely tubular, appearing from winter to summer.

This plant has three subspecies; subsp. humilis, the most widespread and smallest of the subspecies with orange-red flowers; subsp. chrysantha has yellow flowers and is a rare subspecies from the Darling Ranges; subsp. grandis with much taller flower stems and yet to be recognised as a subspecies.

Propagation information available is contradictory. One reference says that it is difficult from seed and another says that it is easy and needs no pre-treatment. However, it then goes on to say that the plants are in evidence after bushfires which suggests that smoke treatment should be used in propagation.

This seed is becoming expensive and is now not available much of the year.

Offered is a packet of 30 seeds complete with Grownotes to assist you in their propagation.

Note: Smoke treatment improves germination. Smoke treatment is the simple process of sprinkling treated vermiculite over the seeds and is available in my store.

All my seed is posted in bubble wrap protection.
